Hi Luke, this lens, the 17-55mm is much faster (e.g. f/2.8), so you'll be able to shoot in less light and get narrow depth of field more easily. (great for blurring the background). I'd imagine the 17-55 would be sharper and produce better images given its price range. The 16-85 though will give you a bit more zoom range/reach, and includes vibration reduction which can also help in low light.

I've got an opportunity to purchase one of these for around £660 (used) - any thoughts on whether/why I should consider it over the 16-85 I was planning to get otherwise with my upgrade to the D7000?
